I want to get three dental implants, but my dentist says he won’t place the implants until I have some root planing done. I don’t have any gum disease symptoms, so this seems like an unnecessary procedure to me. Is my dentist taking advantage of me?

Elaine,
If your dentist were “taking advantage” of you, he would try to push you quickly into the expensive treatments. He’d make a lot more money doing the dental implants than he would treating your gum disease.
I know you said you don’t have any symptoms for gum disease, but to be honest, it is a silent disease. Usually by the time you can actually see or feel the symptoms, it is too late to save your teeth.
Thankfully, your dentist is being proactive in caring for your teeth and gums.
